Chapter Sixteen

Kylee

A Jerk and Some Justification

Kylee strode down the hall and stopped in front of Kasey’s bedroom door. For the first time ever she planned to give him a piece of her mind for all the crap he’d put her through. His horrible treatment of Colleen at the play auditions had been the last straw. She’d never had the nerve to stick up for herself, but after being on stage and having all those people gawking at her, confronting her brother one-on-one didn’t seem so bad after all.

Taking a deep breath, she knocked sharply several times. When he didn’t answer, she pounded on the door again. “Come on, Kase, Mom said you’re home, so I know you’re in there.”

“Go! Away!”

“Okay.” She was halfway back to her room when she realized that with only those two words, she’d let Kasey steal her determination. “Not this time, buddy!” She swung around and marched back to his door. Squaring her shoulders, and putting as much force into her voice as possible, she said, “No! We have to talk. Now! You have three seconds before I—”

“You can come in! But make it quick.”

Kylee stomped into Kasey’s room, shoving the door shut behind her with a satisfying bang. The room was dim and shadowy, but she was still able to see Kasey sprawled on his bed, staring at the ceiling.

“So whadaya want?”

Kylee had rehearsed in her mind what she’d planned to say to her brother, but now that she was actually there, her perfect and wonderful speech had flown the coop.

“You—you kissed Colleen,” she finally blurted out. “You really kissed Colleen! Why in the world did you kiss Colleen? What were you thinking? You had no right! You are—you’re such a—a skunk!” She crossed her arms. There. Take that!

“Great. You got all your frustrations off your brain. Now get out of my room and leave me alone.”

Crap! I didn’t even faze him. She nibbled on the inside of her bottom lip for a moment. “You know what? I don’t think so. I have a lot more I need to say.” As soon as I remember it all.

“Whatever.”

Kylee eyeballed her brother. His lethargy was out of character. Most of the time he was in high spirits and had a gleam in his eyes that led to some thoughtless joke or prank. “What’s wrong with you? Are you sick or something?”

“I’m fine. And I’ll be even better when you’re gone.”

No way was she leaving. All she needed was a quick pep talk to herself and she’d be ready to say what she had to say. You can do this, Ky. Don’t back down. Kasey needs to hear this. “You have been a nasty thorn in my side ever since we were little kids. And I don’t know why. Do you know why?” Not waiting for him to respond, she continued. “It was constant fake snakes and spiders in my bed, flies in my food, gum in my hair, telling everyone in second grade I wet the bed, gluing all my shoes together.
